Olive groves key solution to global climate crisis, senior Iranian official says
Tehran - Marking Iran’s National Olive Day, Deputy Agriculture Minister Mohammad Mehdi Boroumandi highlighted the critical role of olive cultivation in addressing the global climate crisis.
Boroumandi said olive groves are “part of the global solution” to climate change, noting their capacity to absorb and store carbon dioxide.
He stressed that olives are not just an agricultural commodity but a pillar of food security, public health, rural livelihoods, and environmental sustainability.
The deputy minister emphasized that despite challenges such as water shortages, climate change, and emerging pests, Iran’s olive sector has strong potential in international markets. “With scientific management and international cooperation, he said, the industry can play a decisive role in sustainable development.”
According to Boroumandi, expanding sustainable olive production helps protect soil resources, prevent desertification, preserve biodiversity, and mitigate the impacts of climate change.
He also noted that olives hold a strategic position in Iran’s Seventh Development Plan, with both the government and Parliament prioritizing their development as a national objective.
